The ChairHome.html

The Chair was an independent research project conceived, developed and executed for my MA thesis in Scenography at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London, UK. The project was an adaptation of the early novel Murphy by Samuel Beckett. The premise was to use the hindsight of Beckett’s theatrical oeuvre to stage the characters and themes presented in his early prose work. As a scenographer approaching the work I had the opportunity to present a unity of vision with the staging, lighting, properties, costumes, and sound design. I wrote the script and directed the piece as well. Despite this, the project was very collaborative, the actor who appears on stage also recorded voiceovers for two other characters in the script, a second actress was employed to play the part of Celia though she was only preset as a disembodied voice. The timing a pace of the show was dependent on the chemistry between the actor on stage and the sound technician working cue to cue with a DAT recorder from the booth. Other collaborators included a professional sound recordist, a composer and violinist who provided original score and incidental music. The piece incorporated many of Beckett’s staging techniques of isolation and confinement within a limitless and yet liminal space.http://livepage.apple.com/
