The Nabarro Sculpture Gate was a very satisfying commission. The brief was to create a vehicle gate to allow access to a recently opened sculpture park at Bere Mill near Whitchurch, Hampshire, UK. Sculptors and other artists whose work resides at Bere Mill include David Nash, Andy Goldsworth, and Rohan Ward. There is a small spring which feeds the River Test running right through the site. I felt that the water’s presence needed honouring in the design so I added a smaller gate to the left and right of the vehicle gates, one for people to pass through and the other for the stream. After the initial design phase I set up a mobile shop in an outbuilding of the mill and invited my friend and colleague James Burlak to contribute his fine woodworking skills to the project. We brought a bandsaw and hollow-chisel mortiser down from my workshop in London. We then set about transforming custom-milled local green English oak into the component parts of the gate. All of the joints are mortice and tenon or half lapped and then pegged with seasoned oak from reclaimed timbers of the original mill. The ironwork is customised to match the curves of the gate and then powder coated. We worked quickly and efficiently, but also took the time to draw inspiration from the idyllic surroundings and to try and catch a few fish. The result is a gate that will stand for one hundred years or more. I would like to think that I will be around long enough to honour this guarantee.http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.tate.org.uk/stives/exhibitions/nash/images/pyramidcube.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.tate.org.uk/stives/exhibitions/nash/&usg=__-O77PkJGDnpb6Z7Z2cBGLvH3zNo=&h=208&w=300&sz=6&hl=en&start=7&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=snp132QwR5PlBM:&tbnh=80&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3DDavid%2BNash%2Bartist%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DvBQ%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26channel%3Ds%26tbs%3Disch:1http://visualmelt.com/Andy-Goldsworthyhttp://www.rohanwarddesigns.com/http://visualmelt.com/Andy-Goldsworthyhttp://www.rootsdesignltd.com/shapeimage_5_link_0shapeimage_5_link_1shapeimage_5_link_2shapeimage_5_link_3
